I hope you’ve enjoyed my recent posts. I am working on a bunch more and trying to decide what works best.
When I first started THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DESK I wanted to write long essays about contemporary art and put it in some historical context. I was able to do that a couple of times, but the process has become much more involved, and this means that publishing each one takes more time. What I really want is to engage most actively with what’s going on as well as deal with historical issues and themes.
I have been working on a long essay about the use of line in contemporary art starting with historical forebears like Kandinsky, Mondrian, Stella, Twombly, LeWitt, and continuing with several contemporary artists from 2000 to now. I will be breaking this into several posts with links to and from past sections. That way I can continuously expand upon what I feel is an important theme that remains relevant today. I will be working with other themes such as artists who work with paper as a medium or specific support, and on artists who have developed a strong abstract esthetic. I will also be writing on artists from different parts of the world, placing them within their geographic communities and related scenes.
I continue to write about Literature for my newsletter A READING SPACE, and I am working on essays about poetry, novels, plays, memoirs, etc. Some on contemporary poets of my acquaintance. Some general musings on the act of reading, etc. No matter the subject the theme is the title of the newsletter, that space we enter when engaging with a book form text.
I want to thank my supporters and hope that more will consider paid subscriptions.
Appreciate your replies. Everyone else: This post is a thread. Who has a question or reply to anything I've said? You can also reply to other Letters in the same way.
